Our Topical Event series continued this June at the stunning Rudding Park, where we brought together family business leaders for a timely and engaging conversation on The Budget Impact and Smart Thinking for Family Businesses.
We were delighted to open the session with a welcome from Nick Mackaness, Director at Rudding Park, who shared his family business’s story from a second-generation perspective. His reflections on long-term vision, adaptability, and the importance of family values set the tone perfectly, showing how thoughtful planning and resilience can underpin sustained success.
Leading the main discussion was Steve Roberts from AAB, who brought clarity and practical advice to a complex subject.
While much of the national media has focused on how Inheritance Tax changes are affecting farmers, the implications stretch far wider across all business sectors. For family businesses in particular, the pressure of responding to evolving tax policy (combined with wider economic shifts) is making it more important than ever to plan with intention.
One key takeaway from the event was the need for early, strategic action. Whether you’re thinking about how to value your business, considering pension structures, or exploring options like Trusts, understanding your choices now can help protect both your business and your legacy later. The expert insight shared by our event partners at AAB helped break down these complex areas, giving guests valuable clarity and direction.
But the conversation didn’t stop at tax planning. Our Family Business Community guests also discussed issues that are sometimes less visible but just as critical – including succession planning, divorce, family governance, and generational transitions. Practical tools like family charters, shareholder agreements, and pre-emptive planning around gifting and ownership structures were all explored as ways to future-proof the family enterprise and avoid conflict before it arises.
All of this took place in a confidential, respectful environment, thanks to our Chatham House Rule approach – ensuring open, honest dialogue that stays in the room but leaves our participants with fresh thinking.
While the challenges are real, so too are the opportunities, especially when supported by the right people and advice. For many, the chance to connect with others who understand the unique pressures of running a family business was just as valuable as the technical insight. There’s real power in shared experience, and a sense of strength in knowing you’re not navigating this alone.
At the Family Business Community, we’re committed to helping families move forward with clarity, confidence, and connection. Whether you’re looking for peer support, expert guidance, or simply a place to ask the questions that matter, we’re here to help.
