Hotel group trains management team in mental health awareness

Line managers at a Lake District hotel group are benefitting from a training course in mental health awareness to improve their skills and better support their teams.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues is investing in the mental health support programme, with an initial cohort of 48 managerial staff undertaking the course which is being delivered by Kendal based provider Cornerstone Training.

The mental health awareness training is designed to help participants recognise early warning signs of mental health issues amongst their colleagues and give them greater confidence in supporting someone who may be experiencing such difficulties.

It teaches them how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a ‘first aid’ basis, promoting early intervention which supports recovery.

During the programme, the hotel group’s managers are learning about common mental health issues, how to challenge the stigma often associated with them, and the tools they need to take the best possible care of the mental health and wellbeing of their team members.

Michael Kay from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues explains: “The training is a real plus for our managerial staff and the teams working with and for them.  A better understanding of this subject will help our leaders in the business to facilitate and improve communication, reduce conflict, and better manage both their own and their team’s performance.

“We’ve committed to the programme to help create better people leaders.
That’s part of our overall strategy to develop our employees across the organisation, both from a professional and personal perspective.”

Ramin Salehi from Cornerstone Training, a registered instructor with MHFA England, adds: “The course we’ve shaped for English Lakes Hotels’
managers is all about equipping them with the skills and understanding they need to open up conversations, break down stigma, and encourage mental health resilience.

“It is also designed to ensure people are aware of how to access help, allowing for quicker recoveries and more positive outcomes.”
