The Dalesman is crowned Pub of the Year at Cumbria Tourism Awards

The family-owned and run Dalesman Country Inn joined a line up of top tourism businesses at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal on July 5th to hear the winners of the 2023 Cumbria Tourism awards revealed.

The Sedbergh-based inn was named as winner of the ‘Pub of the Year’ category which recognises pubs that make a significant contribution to tourism in their area, with a food and drink offering that includes quality locally sourced produce and demonstrates excellence across every aspect of their business.

The Cumbria Tourism Awards are held annually to celebrate the county’s diverse tourism industry, this year culminating with a prestigious black-tie ceremony hosted by ITV Border reporter and presenter Kate Walby.

Carol Currie, Manager of The Dalesman said, “We’re absolutely delighted, we couldn’t believe it! We’ve been working for years to try and give something to the area which visitors and locals alike will appreciate and now tonight with this, we feel like we’re getting closer to what we want to achieve.

Sedbergh and the surrounding area is such a fantastic place, with a friendly atmosphere that visitors love. We want to offer visitors that warm welcome as well as a true taste of the local area through our menu.”

The Dalesman is a 16th century coaching inn that has been run by two generations of the Garnett family for over thirty-seven years. Whilst the pub still plays a central role in village and community life, their high quality food and drink offering now attracts foodie visitors to the picturesque town.

The Dalesman along with the other winners of the 2023 Cumbria Tourism Awards will now have the opportunity to go on to represent the county at the national Visit England Awards next year.
