A HIGH-flying solicitor who juggles two jobs with family life is celebrating, after marking her 15th year with a top Cumbrian legal firm by becoming a director.

Zoe Calway’s appointment at Cartmell Shepherd is proof that talent, determination and a will to succeed can deliver real results.

She took part in her first board meeting at the business almost 15 years to the day that she stepped through the doors as a legal executive in 2003.

Zoe said: “When I was approached to be a director I couldn’t believe it. I was absolutely delighted as it was not something I had expected.

“I suppose I had preconceptions about what the requirements of a director may be, and thought the fact I worked part time might have ruled me out.

“But clearly they saw beyond that and recognised my commitment to the business, inside and outside of office hours, and believed I could play a role in the future as part of a succession plan.”

Zoe’s appointment to the board takes the number of directors to eight.

Originally from Lincolnshire, Zoe studied law at Birmingham University before moving to Cumbria with her now-husband, where she took on a role at a Kendal-based legal company.

She moved to Cartmell Shepherd in 2003 where the company funded her training to become a solicitor. In 2014, she was appointed as an associate solicitor. Now she is one of the legal firm’s foremost experts in the area of private client work, dealing with matters such as wills, inheritance and probate and working out of the firm’s Penrith office.

Zoe said: “I love coming into work and the area of law which I practice. It is so varied and you really get to know the clients you are working with – along with their extended family.

“They place trust in me to help them at important times of their life, often when a situation is emotionally charged or something has happened to them. It is my job to guide and advise them to help them make balanced decisions.”

When she is not at work – or taking part in one of Cartmells’ many out-of-office activities – Zoe works with her husband, David, who is a partner in successful research business, Global Tourism Solutions. She also enjoys cycling, running, and spending time with her two young children.

She said: “I have always been involved in different aspects of the business and have shown a willingness to go beyond the 9-5. That has led to all sorts of opportunities beyond the day job, including completing the Coast to Coast bike ride – something I never thought I would do.

“My appointment as a director of the business is very exciting and an indication of how it is possible to progress at Cartmell Shepherd. I’m very much looking forward to the future.”
