A Windemere hotel is marking National Tree Week by donating a free sapling to guests staying with them during the UK’s largest annual tree celebration.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues is seeking to raise awareness for conservation and contribute towards net zero emission targets with the environmental initiative from 26 November to 5 December 2022.

Every room with guests staying at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa during National Tree Week will receive a native Hazel tree sapling to take away and plant when they get home.

Alternatively, they can ask the hotel to act as a custodian of their tree and plant it on their behalf in new woodlands adjacent to Low Wood Bay.  Michael’s Wood was established in memory of English Lakes Hotels chairman and managing director, the late Michael Berry, and the hotel group has already planted 2,500 trees there.

National Tree Week is an initiative spearheaded by The Tree Council and is celebrated in the UK every year at the end of November as it is a key time for trees and marks the beginning of the planting season.

Tim Berry from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues explains: “We anticipate we’re going to donate around 300-400 trees during National Tree Week and we’re encouraging as many guests as possible to get involved by planting their sapling at home or asking us to plant it here at Low Wood Bay on their behalf.

“Tree planting in the Lake District and North Lancashire represents one of our core environmental commitments – our aim is to help revitalise areas with much less tree cover than they had in the past.

“We’re always looking for new ways to do our bit for conservation, the environment and to reduce our carbon footprint.  As well as tree planting initiatives under our sustainability fund, we’re using natural, renewable resources through our hydro-electric turbine at Low Wood Bay and making the most of the sun’s energy with solar panels at The Wild Boar Inn and Lancaster House Hotel.”

Planting new trees and creating new areas of woodland cover is seen as vital for mitigating against climate change, maintaining habitats and for flood protection.  It also serves to protect the beauty of the rural countryside and the diversity of flora and fauna.

There is a national target from the Committee on Climate Change for the UK to plant 1.5 billion trees – at least 30,000 hectares per year – if it is to attain net zero emissions by 2050.
